I\u2019m lucky to live in a period property with high ceilings, so that\u2019s half the battle, but I\u2019m always trying to make a space look taller and I kept this in mind whilst styling my mantel, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve placed the round mirror half-way between the fireplace and the ceiling, and although it\u2019s not necessarily \u2018functional\u2019 (it\u2019s a bit too tall to check yourself out in!), it makes the space feel bigger and doesn\u2019t add any clutter to the otherwise busy mantel shelf.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/emeraldterrace.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_1051-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emeraldterrace.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_1051-576x1024.jpg 576w, https:\/\/emeraldterrace.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_1051-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/emeraldterrace.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_1051-768x1365.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emeraldterrace.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_1051-864x1536.jpg 864w, https:\/\/emeraldterrace.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_1051-34x60.jpg 34w, https:\/\/emeraldterrace.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_1051.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Step Three: Pick a stand out piece&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And work around that. I used to have my mantel piece full of knick knacks of all shapes and sizes (picture frames, candles, plants), but I found the space only really came together when I chose one central, stand out piece and then accessorised around that. This dried flower arrangement was a commission piece by a local florist called Grasshopper Designs, who I worked with to create something that was tall (see experimenting with height) and in keeping with my \u2018accent colours\u2019.
